Sembcorp Marine and Chevron Partner to Lower LNG Fleet Carbon Intensity

Sembcorp Marine Ltd

Chevron Corporation, through Chevron Shipping Company LLC, its subsidiary, has recently announced an agreement with Sembcorp Marine Repairs & Upgrades Pte. Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sembcorp Marine Ltd. The partnership will help to reduce the carbon intensity of its LNG fleet operations. Chevron will install the latest technologies aboard Chevron vessels, with the assistance of Sembcorp Marine, to support their energy transition goals under the agreement. Changes are also consistent with the decarbonization targets International Maritime Organization (IMO) set.

Chevron’s goal is to lower the carbon footprint of LNG transportation by installing new technologies like hull air lubrication, a reliquefication system, and a new gas compressor. Together, these modifications are anticipated to reduce cargo boil-off, reduce fuel consumption, and increase cargo delivery volumes.

Sembcorp Marine has extensive experience with complex LNG fleet modifications and a track record of delivering lower-carbon solutions to the maritime industry. Sembcorp Marine will provide engineering, procurement, installation, and commissioning (EPIC) services to Chevron and anticipates that the work will be completed by mid-2025.

Sembcorp Marine President and CEO, Wong Weng Sun, said, “Sembcorp Marine is committed to advancing environmental sustainability through the development of industry-leading solutions.” He also said, “Working with Chevron on its LNG fleet upgrades is an immediate way to accelerate the lowering of the carbon footprint in the maritime industry, to achieve the IMO’s target to reduce emissions from international shipping by at least half by 2050, compared to the levels in 2008.”
