The Evolution of Supply Chain

The term Supply Chain Management may have only been around since 1983, but the task of moving, storing and tracking products has a long history. The early forklift revolutionized warehouses in the 1920s while the first UPC barcode in 1974 revolutionized inventory and retail operations. IBM's computerized inventory system emerged in 1967, leading to a cascade of advancements as did the 1983 Arpanet forerunner of the Internet.
