FedEx and Pyxera Global Experiments with E-waste Logistics

FedEx | October 11, 2023

FedEx and Pyxera Global implement a circular logistics model to give new life to donated electronic devices, promoting environmental responsibility and social impact. Repairable devices are now directed to Electronics Recycling Solutions (ERS), a R2v3-certified Nashville-based social enterprise that trains adults with developmental disabilities in valuable repair skills. Unrepairable devices are meticulously disassembled, and their components, including lithium-ion batteries, are repurposed by the American Battery Technology Company (ABTC) to support a domestic battery metals supply chain powering electric vehicles. FedEx and Pyxera Global have embarked on a mission to test a circular logistics model. This innovative effort is designed to give new life to devices generously donated by individuals, ensuring an environmentally responsible and socially impactful process. If a donated device is repairable, it will embark on a journey to Electronics Recycling Solutions (ERS), a Nashville-based social enterprise. ERS holds the prestigious R2v3 certification and is committed to a noble mission – the training of adults with developmental disabilities in valuable repair skills that are in high demand. However, in cases where a device proves beyond repair, it will be carefully disassembled, and its parts, including the valuable lithium-ion batteries, will be thoughtfully repurposed. These components will find a new life, thanks to the American Battery Technology Company (ABTC), which will transform them into essential materials to support a domestic battery metals supply chain. These recycled materials will be crucial in powering electric vehicles, contributing to a greener and more sustainable future. Informed by the design and execution of the pilot, Pyxera Global has recently released a framework intended to serve as a blueprint for the logistics industry to embrace its role in enabling a circular economy that benefits people and the planet. The initial report, 'Powering Sustainability through Circular Logistics,' is founded on the premise that transitioning to a circular economy is crucial to achieving a sustainable future. John Holm, Vice President of Strategic Initiatives at Pyxera Global, "Logistics and delivery companies are uniquely positioned to play a critical role in this transition through circular logistics, providing collection, sorting, and redistribution." [Source - Access Wire] Holm emphasizes that the report highlights how logistics companies can shape a sustainable reuse economy for consumer products and provide services for manufacturing and retail companies on their journey toward more circular practices. This innovative approach to logistics and sustainability demonstrates a promising path forward, where industry leaders actively contribute to a more environmentally conscious and responsible future.
