When anthropologist Joseph Tainter studied ancient advanced societies, he identified a simple underlying principle in common: increasing complexity, unfettered, resulted in diminishing returns. Societies that didn’t control complexity either ceased to dominate or disappeared entirely. In his 1988 book, The Collapse of Complex Societies, Tainter explains how each of these societies first flourished as they became more complex, as initially each additional bit of complexity more than pays for itself in improved output.
