The British Citizen Awards was borne from an idea which came about following my application to the Cabinet Office for a Queen’s Honour for someone that I felt was very deserving. Two years on and I was still no further forward, in the end I had to admit defeat. The complex application process coupled with the relatively few Honours awarded to non-celebrities each year left me somewhat disillusioned. I knew that there are very many worthy citizens in Britain doing great work deserving of recognition.
