With Qualcomm aggressively offering multiple APs, baseband chips and RF front-end modules (FEMs) to tap the 5G smartphone market, its Taiwan-based backend service providers including IC packager ASE Technology Holding, IC probing specialist Chunghwa Precision Test Tech (CHPT) and testing and certification service provider Sporton International are poised to benefit from the ever-expanding penetration of 5G smartphones in the coming few years, according to industry sources. The sources cited Gartner statistics indicating global smartphone shipments will reach 1.5 billion units in 2019, with 5G models estimated at 15 million units. 5G phones' penetration rate is expected to grow to 5% in 2020 and 51% by 2023.
