February 13, 2019 / Air Cargo News

Cargo was the poor performer at Frankfurt airport in January, the only sector to register a decline versus the same month in 2018. Airfreight and airmail at the German airport, Europe's largest cargo hub, posted a 4.3% decline in January to 163,332 tonnes. A spokesperson for the airport's owner, Fraport, said: "Decisive factors affecting cargo traffic included weaker global trade and the resulting dip in demand." By contrast, Frankfurt handled nearly 4.7m passengers in January, starting the year with 2.3% traffic growth, although it would have been 4.3% rise "Without strike and weather-related flight cancellations". Aircraft movements climbed by 2.3% to 37,676 takeoffs and landings in the reporting month.
